Steps to Become a Notary in Montana
Step 1- Complete a four-hour notary training course
New notary applicants are required to complete a four-hour Montana notary course within 12 months of the notary’s application submission date. The American Association of Notaries is an approved notary course vendor in the State of Montana. Click here to order the notary course, notary bond and supplies.
Step 2- Take and pass the Montana notary exam
All notary applicants are required to pass the Montana Notary Exam to prove their understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the office. The exam is offered by the Montana Secretary of State. There is no additional cost for the examination.
Step 3- Obtain a notary bond in the amount of $25,000
All Montana notary applicants are required to provide proof of a four-year, $25,000 notary bond. The cost of the bond is $40. The notary bond protects the public from any errors made by the notary. The notary bond is available for download immediately on checkout.
Step 4- Sign the statement and oath of office
Sign the statement and oath of office attached to the notary bond you receive from us before another notary. The notary will put you under oath and notarize the document. The oath is a pledge that you will uphold the constitutions of the United States and Montana and perform your duties to the best of your ability.
Step 5- Complete the Montana notary application
Go to the Montana Secretary Of State’s Online Notary Portal and log in to your account. You will be asked to upload a copy of the course training certificate, the exam certificate, the notary bond, and the signed oath of office. There is a $25.00 application fee payable to the State.
Step 6- Order a notary stamp and notary journal
All Montana notaries are required to record notarial acts in a journal and authenticate them with an inked notary stamp. All our notary stamps are made in house and comply with Montana notary law.
Step 7- Email us a copy of your notary commission certificate.
